鄭君在例言里很明白的說，“現(xiàn)在所譯的是泰戈爾各集的詩，都是：（一）我所最喜歡讀的；（二）是我的能力所比較的能夠譯得出的。”因此，鄭君“主張詩集的介紹，只應(yīng)當(dāng)在可能的范圍選擇，而不能——也不必——完全整冊的搬運過來。”我想：我們?nèi)羰菫榉g而翻譯，那么鄭君這種“選擇”的方法是極穩(wěn)當(dāng)?shù)模晃覀內(nèi)羰恰盀榇蠖鄶?shù)的譯者計”，那么“選擇主義”是值得宣稱的；但我們?nèi)魹榻榻B而翻譯，尤其是介紹全集而翻譯，所謂“選擇主義”是大大的要不得的。

在鄭君的選擇里，究竟有多少錯誤，我沒有那許多時間去做義務(wù)校對。現(xiàn)在只略舉幾個。

（一） 第一首原文：“……And yellow leaves of autumn which have no songs,

flutter and fall there with a

sign.”鄭譯是：“秋天的黃葉，他們沒有什么可唱，只嘆息一聲，飛落在那里。”“which have no

songs”是沒有歌唱的意思，絕對不能譯作“沒有什么可唱”。譬如說，“某先生沒有笑”，我們似乎不便改做“某先生沒有什么可笑”。并且在這首里，秋葉沒有歌唱正是和前節(jié)夏鳥窗前歌唱對比說的，所以鄭譯不但是把這幾個字譯錯了，把原詩的詩意也毀滅了不少。

（二） 第四首原文：“It is the tears of the earth that keep her smiles in

bloom,”案“bloom”可做一朵“花”解，亦可做開花的狀態(tài)解；“in”可做“在…里”解，但有時是指時間而言，有時指空間而言，又有時是指狀態(tài)而言。鄭君把“bloom”譯作“在花里”，便欠妥了。原詩的意思是把笑容的豐滿比做一朵花正在盛開的狀態(tài)，鄭譯“把微笑保存在花里”便無意義了。況且“keep…in

bloom”是一個連貫的詞法，keep絕不該單單的譯做“保存”。

（三） 第八首原文：“Her wistful face haunts my dreams like the rain at

night.”鄭譯是：“她熱切的臉攪擾著我的夢魂，如雨滴在夜里。”案，原詩的意思是說，她熱切的臉，即如夜雨一般，攪擾著我的夢境。鄭君無緣無故的把“夜雨”譯做“雨滴在夜里”，這樣一來，乃是把“她的臉”比做“雨”，“攪擾著”比做“滴”，“我的夢境”比做“夜間”了。這是與原詩的詩意大相左了。我的一個朋友告訴我說，鄭君的“滴”字不是動詞，“雨滴”乃是一個名詞。我更不明白了，假若rain可以譯做“雨滴”，請教raindrop該譯做什么？

（四） 第十一首原文：“Some unseen fingers, like idle breeze, are playing

upon my heart the music of the

ripples.”鄭譯是：“有些看不見的人物，如懶懶的微飔似的，正在我的心上，奏起潺湲的樂聲。”案“fingers”乃是手指的意思，如今鄭君譯做“人物”真是出人意外了！我倒不敢相信我自己的英文程度了，于是請出《韋伯斯特大字典》來教訓(xùn)我，但是韋先生并沒有說“fingers”就是“人物”。其實這倒還不只是翻字典的問題，實在可以說是常識的問題。原詩的意思是把心比做一個樂器。我們只要有一些常識就該明白，在樂器——例如琴——上奏樂的應(yīng)該是手指。如今鄭君說有些“人物”在我的心上奏樂，我不曉得“我的心”該有多大的容量才能容受得了那些“人物”！寫到這里，我忽的想起，鄭君致錯之由，大概是把fingers錯認(rèn)為figures了罷？哈哈！
